According to the National Anticorruption Center, the individual who allegedly operated under the guise of a Limited Liability Company provided document preparation services for Moldovan citizens wishing to regain Romanian citizenship. Additionally, this person offered translation and apostille services.

The respective person, along with others, would have claimed to have influence over the employees of the Civil Status Office in the municipality of Cahul and over those in the General Consulate of Romania in Cahul.

This person would have allegedly demanded and received illegal payments from individuals ineligible for obtaining Romanian citizenship, claiming that they could, through public officials, ensure the rapid and priority acquisition of civil status documents.

At the same time, the person in question would have facilitated the applicants in the fictitious registration of the temporary residence visa in the municipality of Cahul and in the districts under the jurisdiction of the General Consulate of Romania in Cahul. Thus, they would have met the criteria for territorial distribution and could have submitted the files for the continuation of the procedure for regaining Romanian citizenship at the same consulate.

The diplomatic mission clarifies that the measure comes in the context of recent changes to the national legislation regarding the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.

The new Citizenship Law of the Republic of Moldova is set to come into effect on December 24th. Based on the new provisions, applications for citizenship will be accepted exclusively if they are submitted personally by the applicant, at the subdivisions of the Public Services Agency, at diplomatic missions or at consular offices, without the possibility of using intermediaries or proxies.

Also, the law introduces the obligation for any applicant to demonstrate knowledge of the Romanian language and the Constitution. The new legislative framework includes consolidated mechanisms for verifying identity and document authenticity, for assessing financial capabilities, and for confirming the absence of criminal records.

The delegation also visited C1 Holding, a group that brings together six companies active in the trucking industry. These operate in the United States with a fleet of 220 trucks and 350 trailers and also have 85 employees in the Republic of Moldova.

“Through active involvement in local communities and dialogue with American authorities, Moldovans in the USA contribute to increasing the visibility of the Republic of Moldova, attracting investments and expanding trade exchanges,” emphasized Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi.
