SPSEE monitors media situation in Moldova

The Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (SPSEE) monitors the media situation in Moldova, Erhard Busek, SPSEE Special Coordinator, who is on a working visit to Moldova, stated Tuesday, January 30, during a briefing. Requested to comment on the situation regarding the reorganisation of the municipal stations “Antena C” and “Euro TV Chisinau”, Busek said that he did not receive yet the report on the situation of the two institutions, but gave assurances that “the roundtable Nr. 1” part of the Pact, which focuses on issues related to democracy and human rights, will have in view the situation in Moldova as concerns this matter. The new Broadcasting Code, which came in force on August 18, 2006, does not prescribe the existence of local public radiobroadcasters. The Chisinau Municipal Council decided on the reorganisation in early winter, and later on selling the two municipal institutions. But the civil society, political parties and members of the staff share the opinion that this process was performed elusively and with many illegalities. The decisions regarding the reorganisation of the institutions have been sued in court.
