The Ministry of Culture put forward an initiative to institute the National Costume Day on the third Sunday of June. The initiative was proposed for public debates, IPN reports.
According to the initiative’s authors, the national costume inherited from the ancient times represents a mark of the identity. Each people kept an own outfit. In our region, the national costume was worn by all the social strata and became conventional in the cultural area after centuries. Even if the traditional costume was replaced by modern clothing at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, the national dress was and continues to be used on special occasions and in the daily life, as a distinct sign.
The most recent events that refer to the national costume were the Festival of Embroidered Peasant Blouses, the National Costume Parade, the Winter National Dress Parade and the honoring of the national costume in the festivities held on the occasion of the Independence Day of Moldova in 2013-2014. The Ministry of Culture is hopeful that the institution of the National Costume Day will step up the activities to promote the national dress, which is the symbol of the identity of each people.
