Romanian prosecutor: “If you want efficient judiciary, I recommend you Romania’s”

“If you want an efficient judicial system, I recommend you Romania’s. The National Anticorruption Directorate is trusted by over 62% of the population,” chief vice prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate of Romania Nistor Calin said in the National Anticorruption Conference “Together with civil society against corruption” that was held in Chisinau on December 7, IPN reports.

Nistor Calin spoke about the efforts made by Romania in the fight against corruption and the achieved results. “I don’t think that the political system in Romania wanted to really fight corruption initially. They founded anticorruption institutions and said that we have independent institutions, present ourselves well in front of the European organizations and almost completed the anticorruption reforms. If they had seen the real development of the judicial system, they would have delayed the creation of the National Anticorruption Directorate. Now they are practically forced to move in the same direction as society can no longer tolerate politicians who do not take measures to combat corruption,” he stated.

The Romanian prosecutor gave the example of Romania’s judiciary. “If you an efficient judicial system, I recommend you Romania’s. The National Anticorruption Directorate is trusted by over 62% of the population. In the last poll, only the church and army outran us. I think now we beat the church too,” he said.

He noted that for the judiciary system to develop, the prosecutors should enjoy real independence in performing investigations. The political influence in Romania is minimal. “We do not care who is in power. We do not care who is in the opposition. We investigate facts and acts of corruption, no the fact if a person belongs to a party or not,” stated Nistor Calin.

The National Anticorruption Conference staged by the Institute for European Politics and Reforms involved the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola and foreign experts who spoke about the importance of involving civil society in fighting corruption.
