The local referendum on the dismissal of the mayor of Anenii Noi town Mihai Cheibas failed. Secretary of the Central Election Commission Andrei Volentir has told IPN that according to the preliminary results, slightly over 14% of the voters took part in the plebiscite on December 29.
There are over 10,000 people eligible to vote in Anenii Noi, but only about 1,500 persons took part in the referendum. Thus, the voter turnout was 14.55%, which is less than the necessary 1/3 of the votes.
As many as 1,271 of those who cast their ballots voted for the mayor’s dismissal, while 253 voted against.
Under the Electoral Code, when a referendum fails, the same question can be put to the vote again in a plebiscite in only two years.
