Public lesson for children at Municipal Library “B.P.Hasdeu”

About 50 children aged between 7 and 15 were trained to prevent poisonings and drownings at a public lesson staged at the Municipal Library “B.P. Hasdeu” of Chisinau, in partnership with the Public Health Center of Chisinau municipality, IPN reports.

The children, invited from two day summer camps based in Chisinau, were told about the risks they face when they go swimming and the simplest and safest methods that can protect them from this type of accident. They were also informed about cases of poisonings that happen most often in summer. They listened to the recommendations of a doctor and watched short educational films made within a campaign to prevent home accidents involving children.

The Library’s vice director Tatiana Coseri said such lessons will help the children to understand the risks to which they are exposed and how to protect their mates. The minors are a vulnerable group, while the public lessons staged together with an authority in the field will help them to easier comprehend the information about personal safety.

Lilia Plamadeala, head of the Healh Promotion Division of the National Public Health Center, said that in summer the children are less supervised by grownups and are thus more exposed to risks. Among the dangers to which the children are mainly exposed in summer are poisonings, drownings and falls from height.

The lesson was held within the Child Safety Week that was staged with the support of the REPEMOL Project – Regionalization of the Emergency Pediatric and Intensive Care Services in Moldova, in cooperation with the program “Novateca”. This aims to create local partnerships between libraries and different local players, which would contribute to enriching the population’s knowledge of how to prevent accidents involving children. The lesson was a novelty as the training seminars staged so far were intended for parents.

The REPEMOL Project is implemented by the Center for Health Policies and Services Moldova with the assistance of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
