Unemployment is one of the most serious problems faced by the young people, shows the Youth Index launched by the National Youth Council of Moldova. According to the authors, it is a coefficient that reveals the situation of the youth in a number of areas, which will lay at the basis of youth policies, IPN reports.

Youth Index development coordinator Angelica Petrov said this coefficient is an instrument that shows the discrepancy between the situation of the young people and the situation of the adult population, in different areas. It was produced based on data collected from the National Bureau of Statistics and other institutions such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health, and the Central Election Commission.

“The Youth Index revealed that the young people face the problem of unemployment two times more often than the grownups. As regards the migration of labor force, we reached the conclusion that the young people migrate two times more than the adults in order to look for a job abroad or because they already found a job there,” stated Angelica Petrov, noting that another worrisome finding is that the young people drink alcohol to the same extent as the adults.

In the electoral area, it was established that the young people take part in elections in a lower number than the grownups. The data refer to the November 2014 parliamentary elections and the local elections of this June. “A worrying figure is also the number of young people elected as mayors. Of the 898 mayors, only 30 are young. We should thus ask what is democracy is – an instrument used for promotion or an instrument that we really put into practice?” asked Angelica Petrov.

The Youth Index was presented within the Youth Festival staged by the National Youth Council on the occasion of the International Youth Day that is marked on August 12.
