A woman aged 25 from Rezina died because she wasn’t accurately diagnosed and wasn’t hospitalized on time. The doctor to blame was sentenced to two years in jail, but was put on probation for a year. He was also banned from providing medical services for a four-year-period, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the case happened in 2010. The young woman was sent to the hospital by the family doctor with phlegmon (purulent inflammation) in the right axilla and fever. The hospital’s surgeon didn’t yet make an accurate diagnosis and thus didn’t give her appropriate treatment. He also didn’t take measures to hospitalize the patient.

The woman died several weeks later. The medical examiners established that she died because of toxic-septic shock and acute respiratory failure, which represented complications of the bilateral cervical phlegmon.

Based on the evidence collected by the prosecutors, the surgeon was convicted. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
