The young people who choose to leave Moldova look for a higher paying job or go to study, while others leave because they are sick and tired of the way in which the state institutions work. If they fail to earn their living there, many do not return home, but move to a richer country, as sociological analyses show, stated journalist Vlad Bercu.

In the program “15 minutes of economic realism” that is produced in partnership with Radio Free Europe, Vlad Bercu said the fact that the largest part of the Moldovan young people chose to leave the country is confirmed by statistics. These show that the generation of young people continuously decreases. The percentage of the people aged between 15 and 19 declined from 31.8% in 2009 to 26.0% in 2014.

The unemployment is the main cause that makes the young people leave. Four in ten unemployed people are young people. As regards the number of doctors, Moldova reached the lowest level in the past 20 years: 29.0 per 10,000 people. The ratio was so low last in 1997. In the European states, the ratio is at least 33.0 doctors per 10,000 people. The shortage of teaching staff in education is also serious.

According to the national strategy for developing the youth sector until 2020, among the most pressing problems that directly affect the young people are the low participation level and indifference, the precarious economic situation, limited access to education, and political instability. “If the young people leave, it means that these problems remain unsolved. Many of those who leave consider that Moldova does not have a future,” stated Vlad Bercu.

The journalist noted the demographic situation in Moldova is catastrophic. Fewer children are born and the elderly will represent one third of Moldova’s population towards 2050. It will be hard to stop the demographic decline in the immediate period.
