Some 61.7% of the young people in Moldova aged between 14 and 29 are very dissatisfied with the development of democracy in the country. Another 26.3% are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied and only 8.3% are very satisfied. The others didn’t know what to answer, shows a poll carried out by the Center of Sociological Investigations and Marketing Research “CBS-AXA” within the Youth Inclusion project, IPN reports.

“CBS- AXA” sociologist Vasile Cantarji said that a low interest in politics is witnessed among the young people. Only one in four young people is very interested, while the rest are slightly or not at all interested in the political affairs. The interest in politics is higher among young men from urban areas. Also, the interest is closely connected with the level of education. The young people with a high education level show a double interest in politics compared with the rest of the young people.

Vasile Cantarji noted it is a myth that the young people do not vote. Asked how many times they voted in elections after coming of age, each second questioned young person said they took part in all the elections. However, the study shows that one in five young people has never voted yet.

The Internet is the main source of information about the political life for 80% of the young people. At the general population level, the main source of information is television.

Attending the event, Minister of Youth and Sport Victor Zubcu said the data obtained as part of the study will help the authorities to work out policies centering on the needs of the young people. “For us, as a central public authority, this study is very important as it offers us a sociological picture and the interpretation of experts in the youth sector. As there is a wide range of challenges in this sector, we will have to extend the range of offers in this regard,” he stated.

The representative of the EU Delegation to Moldova Marco Gemmer said the goal of the project is to increase the young people’s participation in working out policies on this segment by offering the necessary support. “The European Union adopted an ambitious strategy in the youth sector in order to determine where support is necessary. This study is very important and is carried out not only in the EU, but also in third countries. We need to ensure the young people’s access to education and offer them possibilities of taking part in the social life in an active way,” he stated.

Marco Gemmer also said the study showed that migration and lack of jobs are two key problems faced by the young people in Moldova. He assured that the EU, as Moldova’s partner, will help solve the existing problems so that the Moldovans feel that they are really European citizens.

The Youth Inclusion project is implemented by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and is financed by the European Union.
