The Writers Union of Moldova makes common cause with the Parliament ’90 Association and supports the proposal to hold the Great National Assembly on August 29, 2009. It says that the Assembly must express the people’s will and find solutions to help Moldova overcome the current difficulties, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In a statement issued on May 19, the Writers Union expresses its concern about the political situation created in the country after the April 5 elections. “We, the writers, cannot do nothing and look indifferently at the present government’s deviations from the principles and values that we defended on barricades,” the writers say.
“The massive vote rigging, staging of an attempted coup with policemen, security officers and criminals brought from penitentiaries devastating the buildings of the Parliaments and the Presidential Office, incrimination of the Democratic parties PL, PLDM and AMN, accusing Romania of involvement in the primitive scenario of the attempted coup, repressive actions of unprecedented cruelty carried out by the police and the judicial system against young persons and all the people show that the Communist regime aims to remain in power at any cost in order to hide the crimes committed during eight years of government and avoid being held accountable,” the statement says.
The writers stress that the Moldovan Romanians living between the Prut and the Nistru deserve living in a truly democratic society free from Communist lies.
Subscribing to the statement of the presidium of the Parliament ’90 Association, the Writers Union of Moldova urge the civil society and all people of good faith - intellectuals, doctors, scientists, teachers, farmers, laborers and students – to take part in the Great National Assembly on August 29, 2009 and reiterate their devotion to freedom and a European future.
Late in April, the Parliament ’90 Association proposed calling a new Great National Assembly after 20 years. The members of the Association called on the Writers Union and political parties that entered the Parliament, including the Communist Party, to participate in the creation of an organizational committee. Representatives of the political parties expressed their skepticism about this initiative then.
