“The World Environment Day commemorated on June 5 is an occasion to draw the civil society’s and public authorities’ attention to ecological problems. The economic and financial situation of Chisinau is directly proportional to the situation of the environment,” Vladimir Garaba, president of the Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova, stated for Info-Prim Neo. ”The sanitation of the city, the large number of unauthorized waste dumps and the condition of the authorized ones, the old water and sewer systems – are just several of the acute ecological problems faced by the capital city. The delay in solving them has a negative impact on the people and environment,” Garaba said. Owing to the lack of financial resources, investments and technical personnel, the situation becomes worse. “We, the ecologists, and the local public authorities address this problem and look for solutions, implement different plans of actions to clean the areas and aquatic facilities. But the available resources are insignificant and we cannot do much,” the quoted source said. He is convinced that not only the people are to blame for the environmental pollution. It is the duty of the local authorities to create conditions in the recreational areas and make sure that the water and sewer systems are functional. The economic entities must also assume responsibility and deal with the waste produced by the companies. If the Water Treatment Station is not repaired, we could witness an ecological catastrophe. According to the Sanitary-Epidemiological Center in Chisinau, about 20% of the springs and 5% of the wells in the municipality meet the sanitary-chemical and biological norms. The situation of the ponds and lakes in Chisinau is much worse. Swimming in them is banned. After the 2008 floods, swimming in the Nistru is also not recommended.
