World Bank to offer US$10m to Moldova to support agriculture

The World Bank will provide US$10 million in financial assistance to Moldova to support the agricultural sector. All the formalities were performed and the agreement is to be signed soon. The money will go to compensate farmers for the damage caused by last year’s draught. The issue was discussed in a meeting of Prime Minister designate Iurie Leanca and WB Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova Qimiao Fan, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Government, Qimiao Fan said the World Bank will continue to provide assistance for Moldova’s development, while the future cooperation strategy will center on a number of key directions, including support for the economic reforms, improvement of the investment climate, enhancement of economic competitiveness and of the financial sector. Among other goals are to promote social projects, strengthen the human capacities as well as the education and healthcare sectors. Assistance will be also provided in managing risks generated by climate change, which includes assistance for developing the agrifood sector.

Iurie Leanca said the projects implemented with support from the World Bank focus on areas of major importance for the country’s socioeconomic development. He underlined the importance of ensuring continuity in their implementation, despite the political instability.
