The works to demolish the building of the Gaudeamus Cinema in Chisinau were suspended in the morning of June 11 by an order signed by deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu, IPN reports.
The Chisinau City Hall said the decision to stop the works was taken following protests mounted by a group of citizens who are dissatisfied with the demolition of the building and an interpellation filed by the elected mayor of Chisinau municipality Andrei Nastase.
The building situated at 4 Vasile Alecsandri St has been privately owned since 2004. At the request of the business entity that owns this, the Chisinau City Hall issued an authorization for demolishing the construction on August 19, 2016. The given administrative document was challenged in court by representatives of civil society. On September 20, 2017, he court rejected the lawsuit, ruling that the demolition authorization was issued legally. On February 27, 2018, the City Hall issued an urbanism certificate for designing the zonal urbanistic plan for the given plot on which a residential complex is to be erected.
