A man aged 41 died when he was hit by a board that fell from the tenth floor of a construction on a building site situated in Centru district of the capital city in the afternoon of May 27.
Contacted by IPN for details, Chisinau Police Division press officer Natalia Stati said the man died before an ambulance arrived. An inquiry was started in this case. It was preliminarily established that the man worked legally and was outfitted according to workplace safety norms.
Victor Țurcan, division head at the State Labor Inspectorate, has told IPN that 164 work accident involving 165 persons were recorded so far this year. Sixteen persons died, nine were seriously hurt, while the rest suffered minor injuries. Most of the work accidents occur in the building sector, agriculture and transport sector and the employer is to blame in over half of such accidents.
“The State Labor Inspectorate investigates the accident, draws up a file and sends this to the Prosecutor’s Office for examination. Besides, the company to blame for accidents – the employer or persons holding responsible posts - is obliged to pay damage to the lawful successors or the injured party” stated Victor Țurcan.
In 2018, there were logged 420 workplace accidents that involved 482 persons. Of these, 43 were serious accidents and resulted in 47 deaths and the serous injuring of 22 persons.
