The Saint Nicholas Church in Horodiște, Călărași, one of the oldest wooden churches in Moldova, will undergo restoration, announced Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan during a visit to the district.
Constructed entirely of oak and without a single iron nail, with just a few iron grills at the windows, the building is a state-protected landmark.
The church was erected in 1771-1797 on a stone foundation, in substitution of an older wooden building. The names of the members of the community who helped build it can still be seen inscribed on the foundation stones. The stones originate from the church’s graveyard.
