The General Police Inspectorate provided details about the robbery committed in central Chisinau on June 8. The Inspectorate’s head Ion Bodrug told a news conference that the killed woman worked as cashier at a currency exchange facility. The police do not rule out that the attacker is an employee of the same facility as he knew exactly when the money will be taken for being deposited and that there will be no guard, IPN reports.
Ion Bodrug said the victim and her colleague closed the currency exchange facility situated on Stefan cel Mare Blvd. at about 6pm and walked unaccompanied to the company’s head office on Negruzzi St to deposit the money in a safe. When at the destination, one of the women went up the stairs to the office, while the other one waited outside. According to preliminary investigations, the attacker came by 10 minutes earlier and waited for the cashier on a story.
Ion Bodrug said the owner of the currency exchange facility showed irresponsibility and endangered employees’ lives when allowing the two women to convey such a large sum of money without guard. There were an estimated €20,000, US$15,000 and 135,000 lei in the bag.
The victim was hit by a stiletto in the face and died asphyxiated with her own blood. She was 43. Her colleague waiting outside saw a young man leaving the building shortly afterward. He was dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt and was carrying a white bag. The videos from the cameras set in the area are being examined so as to determine the attacker’s identity. The man was aged between 25 and 30, was athletically built and was about 1.85 meters in height.
Ion Bodrug said the June 8 attack has no connection with the armed attack on a bank car of May 30, when two collectors suffered injuries, while the driver died. The police haven’t yet identified the culprits.
