A 35-year-old woman was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for sexually exploiting another woman in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The victim was promised an attractive salary as a saleswoman, but was left without a passport and was forced into prostitution, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it all happened in 2014. The defendant, who was in Dubai, acted together with another woman, who died, and a man who was already convicted of trafficking in human beings. Thus, for profit and through deception, the three misled a woman by promising her work as a saleswoman at a store in Dubai. Profiting from the victim’s precarious financial situation, they made papers for her and transported her to the destination, accommodating her later with other women and stripping her of her passport.

By applying physical and mental violence against the victim, under the pretext of buying her for US$1,500, they sexually exploited her. The woman provided sexual services to various clients until early 2017, when she managed to flee.

The defendant pleaded not guilty. By the sentence of the Buiucani Court of Chisinau City, she was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months behind bars in a closed penitentiary for women. She was also prohibited from employing people and from carrying out activities related to the transportation of persons for a period of three years.

The sentence is not final and can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeals.
