Who is Octavian Țîcu, candidate for the capital’s mayoralty

The article is part of the information campaign launched by IPN, in which it presents biographical data, information regarding income and possessions, as well as professional background of the contenders for the capital's mayoralty.

The candidate of National Unity Party, Octavian Țîcu, is 47 years old and was born in Costuleni village, Ungheni district. He graduated from "Al. I. Cuza” University, Iasi, Romania, and has a degree in history. Currently he works as researcher and coordinator at the Institute of History within the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and as associate professor at the History and Philosophy Department of the State University of Moldova.

Octavian Țîcu is a professional boxer and seven-time boxing champion of the Republic of Moldova. In 1996 he participated in the Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA, where he obtained the 17th place.

Former Minister of Youth and Sport in 2013, nominated by the Liberal Party. In March 2015, Octavian Țîcu joined the initiative group to set up the European People's Party of Moldova. At the general local elections on June 14, 2015, he was elected district councillor in Ungheni on behalf of "European People's Platform of Moldova - Iurie Leancă" electoral bloc. In August 2015, he announced that he was leaving the European People's Party and also gave up his mandate of district councillor.

At the parliamentary elections on February 24, 2019, running as ACUM Bloc candidate in Ungheni constituency no 16, Octavian Țîcu was in fourth place with 28.30% votes. However, he entered Parliament on the list of ACUM bloc. In September this year, he announced that he was leaving the PPDA group in the Parliament, remaining an independent member of ACUM bloc.

Octavian Țîcu says he has got involved in the election campaign because of the need to "stop the PSRM assault on Chisinau". According to the candidate, if he becomes mayor, he will be especially concerned with the fate of the historical centre of Chisinau. Other priorities include the development of playgrounds, road reconstruction. He also aims to draw up a new urban development strategy.

For January 1, 2017 - December 1, 2018, the Tîcu spouses declare salary incomes of about 231 thousand lei, over 436 thousand lei from teaching or creative activities and over 32 thousand lei - other incomes. The candidate owns an apartment, a car and bank accounts of 83 thousand lei and 2300 euros.
