The average wheat harvest this year is 3,100 tonnes per hectare. The farmers harvested over 1.2 million tonnes of wheat. The average productivity per hectare is by about 15% larger compared with last year, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Eduard Grama said in a news conference held to mark the completion of the campaign to harvest grains and legumes, IPN reports.

Better results were recorded in the districts of Floresti (4.8 tonnes/ha), Taraclia, Soroca and Leova (by 4.2 tonnes/ha). The situation is worse in such districts as Briceni, where 2.7 tonnes/ha were harvested on average, Edinet and Basarabeasca and in the municipality of Chisinau – about 3 – 2.8 tonnes/ha.

Mihail Suvac, division head at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, said that about 60% of the harvested wheat is food wheat. However, owing to the heavy rain of this June, the quality of wheat was affected and the content of gluten decreased.

The division head also said that the wheat harvest is one of the largest in the last five years. Only the farmers who didn’t take care for the plantations not to be affected by pests were affected.

According to the Ministry of the Agriculture and Food Industry, of the over 760,000 tonnes of food wheat, about 350,000 tonnes are needed to ensure the internal food security. The rest of the wheat will be exported.
