Those who wanted could test the quality of the water they drink at a mobile lab set up in the central park of Chisinau “Stephan the Great and Holy” within a festivity staged on the occasion of World Water Day on March 18. The conclusion reached by specialists as a result of the tests was that it is safer to drink water from the municipal water supply system than from artesian wells, IPN reports.

“We discovered nothing unordinary or over the limits. We know well that the hardness of water in wells is higher than that of running water and this contains more chlorine. We didn’t discovered deviations in the samples examined so far,” Elena Vasiliu, head of the drinking water lab of SA “Apa-Canal Chişinău”, said after over 20 samples of water have been analyzed.

The people who came to the festivity stated deferring opinions about consumption of water from the municipal water supply system. Some said the water is tasty and safe, while others said they prefer bottled water as it is cleaner. “I brought a sample of water for testing to show to my neighbors that it is safe to drink running water,” said visitor Ecaterina.

Nina Postica, laboratory assistant at the Chisinau Public Health center, said the water hardness norm in artesian wells is 7 to 10, but the parameters in the municipality of Chisinau are higher than 11. “The people bring samples of water from wells and springs, where hardness is very high. There are special filters that should be installed to remove hardness and drink high-quality water,” she stated.

Arcadie Rusnac, head of the Quality and Control Department of SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau”, said the physical-chemical parameters in the municipal water supply system are determined monthly, while the sanitary parameters and water microbiology are examined daily. “The running water meets all the norms. The inhabitants of Chisinau can safely consume water as it is good. There is no danger,” he assured.

Luminita Suveica, director of the Chisinau Public Health Center, said the water in almost 80% of the wells in the suburbs of Chisinau municipality does not meet the sanitary norms. “This is due to the fact that the territories are not cleaned and the wells are not cleaned after rain and after snow melts. An increase in the number of acute diarrheal diseases is witnessed,” she said.

World Water Day is annually celebrated on March 22. In Moldova this is marked the fourth time.
