The seismic intensity of last night’s earthquake was of three to four degrees out of 12. The quake was felt most strongly in southern Moldova, the epicentral distance being of 65 km from Cahul and of 163 km from Chisinau.

The earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale occurred at 01.04am on April 25 in the Vrancea seismic zone of Romania’s Galați County.

Ion Ilieş, head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Chisinau Institute of Geology and Seismology, has told IPN that the quake happened on the terrestrial surface, at a depth of only 23 km. That’s why it was closer to the Republic of Moldova.

Ion Ilieş noted the earthquake was classed as major. Even if it had a lower intensity compared with that of January 31, which measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, last night’s quake produced practically the same effect, being on the earth’s surface and closer to us. The quake of January 31 occurred at a depth of 120 km.

Four quakes measuring over 4 on the Richter scale were recorded in Moldova so far this year.
