A five-year or ten-year interdiction from entering Russia could be the punishment faced by migrants if they violate the terms of stay, under a stricter legislation that took effect on January 1.

As the online media outlet regnum.ru reported, foreigners entering Russia without a visa may stay in the country for up to 90 days within a period of 6 months without a work permit. If the period of stay exceeds 180-270 days, the immigration offender will face deportation and a 5-year interdiction from re-entering. If the period of stay exceeds 270 days, a 10-year interdiction is applicable.

Also effective on 1 January 2015, foreigners willing to work in Russia will have to acquire a patent for a period of 1 to 12 months. It comes at a monthly cost of 1,200 rubles, or about 325 lei at today's exchange rate. The patent can be extended for one more year.

To obtain the patent, starting this year, applicants must produce a certificate confirming Russian language skills and knowledge of Russian history and legislation. Also, the applicants must hold a Russian insurance policy and a certificate proving that they do not carry any serious disease.

The work patent must be obtained within 30 days from entering Russia, or face fines of up to 5,000 rubles.
