Many of those who needed a taxi on New Year’s Eve could not contact the taxi services, while those who managed to found out that the fares were twice higher, at least at some of the companies. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, administrator of the taxi company 1448 Raisa Godeac said that 28% of the about 8,000 calls that they received on New Year’s Eve could not be satisfied. The company provided more cars in the period, but could not cope with the increased demand. As to the fares, Raisa Godeac said they remained unchanged. If there are clients who can confirm that the drivers asked more money from them, they can file a complaint with the company. The penalties for such violations are severe and include dismissal. Genadie Nistor, administrator of the taxi company 1474, said their charges on New Year’s Eve had been higher. According to him, such a practice is used on holidays by most of the taxi companies. Consultant of the taxi company 1400 Radu Bostan said the demand outstrips the supply during holidays so that not all the clients can be served. He also said that the company’s administration did not make orders to increase the fares, but some of the drivers may have raised them. According to the General Public Transport and Communications Division, about 30 taxi companies operate in the municipality of Chisinau at present.
