The presence of President Maia Sandu in Bucha, at the event to commemorate the victims of the massacre committed a year ago, shows that the Republic of Moldova is on the correct side of history, said political commentator Anatol Țăranu. According to him, Maia Sandu in Bucha transmitted a message of solidarity and gratitude to the people of Ukraine. For his part, Watchdog expert Valeriu Pașa said that if the Ukrainian army hasn’t resisted the Russian aggression, the existence of the Republic of Moldova as a state would be in danger, IPN reports.

On Friday, President Maia Sandu took part in an event to commemorate the victims of the Bucha massacre together with her Ukrainian counterpart and other heads of state and government. “These crimes against humanity must be stopped and punished!” Maia Sandu stated in Bucha.

“Bucha became a symbol of massacres and atrocities committed by the Russian army in Ukraine. The fact that President Maia Sandu took part in the event held to celebrate the liberation of Bucha town from the Russian army a year ago is a gesture of solidarily. It is also a symbolical political gesture that shows the whole administration in Chisinau is on the side of the barricade that opposes Moscow. What happened in Bucha could have happened in the Republic of Moldova if there hadn’t been this heroic resistance of the Ukrainian army. The fact that Maia Sandu went to Bucha is a sign of gratitude of all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova for the heroic struggle of the people of Ukraine,” Anatol Țăranu stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Political commentator Valeriu Pașa said the courage and heroism of the Ukrainian army saved the Republic of Moldova from the Russian aggression. “
Maia Sandu was there near heads of state and government from Central Europe even if the Republic of Moldova is not an EU or NATO member state. For the Republic of Moldova, the relationship with Ukraine remains crucial and such manifestations of support matter for the people of Ukraine and for the Ukrainian political elite. The Republic of Moldova managed to keep its independence owing to the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian army. If the Ukrainian army hadn’t resisted the offensive at the start of the war, the Republic of Moldova would have experienced an existential danger. If Russia had obtained land control to the Republic of Moldova’s border on the Transnistrian segment, aggression against the Republic of Moldova would have followed,” said Watchdog expert Valeriu Pașa.

The Russian army withdrew from the Ukrainian town Bucha on March 31, 2022. Several days later, shocking pictures came from the suburban settlement of Kyiv, showing killed civilians lying on the streets. Later, tens of bodies were found in mass graves close to the town. According to the Ukrainian President, 1,400 people, 37 of whom were children, were killed by the Russian army in Bucha during 33 days.
