After the Free Trade Area between Moldova and the European Union is created, European funds will be provided for the Moldovan economy to become competitive and the Moldovan authorities plan to direct a part of these funds to Transnistria, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said after the meeting with Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk, IPN reports.

Iurie Leanca said that they discussed the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Moldova and the EU. According to him, a free trade area with the EU enables to establish transparent and modern commercial relations and this is good for both Chisinau and Tiraspol.

“Today’s meeting showed that more communication is needed. Maybe we didn’t supply comprehensive information to those from Tiraspol. Our interest is to leave no unclear questions. I suggest avoiding politicizing this theme. The experts should communicate and exchange information. The agreement envisions a period of adaptation for different goods. The EU partners will help us make our economy more competitive. We want the Transnistrian companies to benefit from such aid,” stated Iurie Leanca.

Yevgeny Shevchuk said that Tiraspol and Chisinau have different opinions as regards the effects of the creation of a free trade area with the EU. Those from the region do not know all the details, while the economy of the eastern districts is not prepared.

“We are concerned about the effects that the new commercial policy of Moldova can have on our businesses. We think misunderstandings can appear between Chisinau and Tiraspol. We agreed to analyze this agreement. We are very careful about this. We want our companies to have commercial relations with everyone. We accepted the Moldovan side’s proposal that our experts should examine this accord and make suggestions on it,” said the Transnistrian leader.

The Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement forms part of the Association Agreement with the EU. It will take effect after the latter one is signed. The free trade area with the EU will be created gradually so that Moldova’s economy adjusts itself.
