Moldova should create its own Victory Day symbols, considers Doctor of History Vlad Mischevca. “Sixty-six years since the end of World War II, we have other remains than national ones in our minds. I mean St. George’s Ribbon that is unfortunately used as our own symbol,” the historian said during a scientific session themed “Bessarabia in the Second World War”, Info-Prim Neo reports. If Moldova considers itself a sovereign state, it should have its own, not borrowed symbols, said Vlad Mischevca. “The black and orange Ribbon of Saint George represents the tradition and history of the tsarist army and later of the Soviet army,” he stated. On May 9, it is celebrated the victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The Ribbon of St George or St. George's Ribbon is one of the most recognized and respected symbols of military value in modern Russia. It emerged as part of the Order of St. George, established in 1769 as the highest military award of Imperial Russia. In 2005, Russian activists started to distribute the ribbon as a symbol of victory against fascism in World War II.
