An entrepreneur from Edineț, Vasile Cherdivară, took up farming with his sons on an area of 25 hectares. Later they extended the area and now annually produce between 1,300 and 1,500 tonnes of vegetables grown based on drip irrigation. The family business has prospered thanks to European grants, the entrepreneur confesses.

Vasile Cherdivară revealed several secrets: “We strive to minimize the use of herbicides and we hoe by hand. We grow different crops: onions, cabbage, peppers, eggplants, and this year we also have watermelons and potatoes.”

For the Cherdivară family, the Wholesale Market in Chisinau is the largest market for the vegetables grown in Edineț. There, they manage to sell almost 800 tonnes of fresh vegetables annually.

The entrepreneur noted that after accessing a European grant, he purchased a water filtration system for irrigating the land. The total cost of the project amounted to 180,000 lei, of which 40,000 lei was the entrepreneur’s contribution. Then, the man also accessed European funds to build a vegetable sorting warehouse.

“We raised a loan of 300,000 lei. 180,000 lei was provided by the state and we paid 120,000 lei. The important thing is that they gave the money to us in advance. We put up an assembly and processing warehouse. That’s where we peel the onion when we prepare it for sale,” said the farmer.

Entrepreneur Vasile Cherdivară tends to grow his business and is convinced that the unification is the optimal solution for developing agriculture in the Republic of Moldova.
