“The Alliance for European Integration is trying to endlessly postpone the presidential elections, said Communist MP Sergiu Sirbu. “We see that they do not want to identify a candidate who would be supported by everyone. If no candidate is registered, the elections will be invalidated and, according to the amendment made by the AEI, which we consider unconstitutional, new presidential elections will be called in 30 days. Thus, in 2012 we can have presidential elections practically every month. It is an absurdity. Everybody laughs at us for such a situation,” he stated for Info-Prim Neo. According to Sergiu Sirbu, the ruling alliance counts on a number of scenarios. “They want Lupu to be voted in as head of state by all means. If they do not achieve this objective, they will postpone the presidential elections as long as they can. If somebody fields their own candidate, the alliance will not take part in the voting and a quorum will not be present. If the elections take place, the lawmakers of the AEI will appeal to the Constitutional Court to annul the results. Ultimately, they will impose their candidate on the other MPs,” said the lawmaker. New presidential elections will take place on January 15. No person filed the documents needed to be registered as a candidate for the presidency until January 5. Under a decision adopted earlier by the parliamentary majority, the presidential elections are validated if at least one candidate is registered and at least 61 lawmakers take part in the voting.
