Political analyst Ion Tăbârţă said that we are witnessing a process of unification of the political right in Moldova as a result of the reformation process following the fall of 2015. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, which is quoted by IPN, the expert said the crisis of the pro-European governments and the theft of the US$ 1 billion several years ago led to the diminution of the support and voter sympathy enjoyed by the parties of the right. Other political forces were thus expected to appear.

According to Ion Tăbârţă, these forces were prefigured after 2016 and are now the PPDA and PAS. The powerfully weakened and with an image crisis PL and PLDM, or what remained of the political right that existed before 2014, are yet present on the political arena.

Ion Tăbârţă said the meeting held by the so-called “anti-oligarchic” PL, PLDM, PAS and PPPDA on November 5 was a kind of transmission of the torch from what the political right was before 2016 to what it is now. The cooperation between these parties that refers for now only to single-member constituencies is rather good because the current mixed electoral system with one round of voting obliges the right to enter the elections with one candidate.

The analyst noted that these parties should identify the eventual candidates in each constituency and determine their popular approval rating and should support them if they are worthy representatives of the PL or PLDM. “These parties will have to cope with all kinds of camouflaged candidates of the right, satellites of the ruling party, whose goal will be to diminish the chances of the candidate of the genuine anti-oligarchic right,” he stated.

The analyst anticipated the new elements brought by the mixed system can cause surprises in Moldovan politics, such as the voiding of elections or failure to form a government.
