The waste collected in Chisinau will be stored at the dump in Tantareni, Anenii Noi, during two years and a half. Mayor of Tantareni Ina Pascan, in a news conference held together with Prime Minister Pavel Filip and deputy mayor of Chisinau Nistor Grozavu, said the decision was taken by the local council in the evening of July 5 amid tensions as the village has been ignored by the municipality during 30 years, IPN reports.

According to Ina Pascan, the municipal authorities made many promises to villagers to persuade them to consent to waste storage and these were accepted with difficulty. “The people no longer have confidence. It was a very difficult step for our community. Owing to negligence, the situation in Tantareni village has worsened considerably,” said the mayor, noting that the contract will be terminated if the promises are not fulfilled.

For his part, Nistor Grozavu said the reopening of the waste dump is beneficial both to the inhabitants of Chisinau and to the villagers from Tantareni. “The made promises will be delivered. Nothing has been done during 30 years, with small exceptions. The village was ignored and the waste dump wasn’t used in accordance with the environmental regulations,” he stated.

Pavel Filip said the landfill situated on Uzinelor St near Bubuieci commune, to which waste was taken while the waste dump in Tantareni was closed, wasn’t prepared for this. “I think the law enforcement bodies will clarify the situation. If they knew that such a serious problem existed in the municipality, why didn’t they identify a permanent solution in the period, but accepted a temporary one?” asked the Premier.

The Chisinau City Hall will annually allocate 6 million lei to Tantareni, will reinforce and maintain the levee near the waste dump, will rehabilitate and reopen the water treatment station, will set up street lighting in the commune, will finance the repair of local roads, will build a bypassing road so that the garbage trucks avoid the village when they transport waste. Recently, the Chisinau Municipal Council decided to allocate 39 million lei for these purposes.

Contacted by IPN, prosecutor Maria Vieru said the Environmental Fraud Division of the Prosecutor General’s Office is examining the conditions in which the municipality used the landfill located on Uzinelor St. A criminal case over this was started on May 25.
