Waste dump located on Uzinelor St is a source of pollution, ecologists

The waste dump that is situated on Uzinelor St is a source that pollutes the soil and the environment, ecologists warned, calling on the Chisinau administration to resume transporting the garbage to the dump in Tantareni village of Anenii Noi district, Info-Prim Neo report. In a public debate held by the Consultative Council of Environmental NGOs, the head of the Chisinau Local Organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova Vlad Garaba said the solid waste is stored on Uzinelor St, which is close to Bubuieci village, illegally as the place is not appropriately laid out. Alexandru Bajura, vice director of the sanitation company “Autosalubritate”, said the garbage is taken to Uzinelor St on a temporary basis, until the problem in Tantareni is solved. “The waste cannot be stored in Tantareni now as the residents of the village are against. We are waiting for a decision of the Chisinau Municipal Council,” said Bajura. Alexandru Apostol, director of the Chisinau Ecological Agency, said there are no conditions for storing waste on Uzinelor St. There were cases when dangerous chemical substances were taken there. “The waste dump in Tantareni has a storage capacity of at least ten more years. The authorities are to reach a compromise and sign contacts for using it,” stated Apostol. The mayor of Bubuieci Ion Saranuta said the garbage dump located near the settlement creates inconveniences. They set fire to the waste at night and the smoke covers Bubuieci. The people will start to protest if no measures are taken. “There are children, elderly persons and sick people. In summer, there appear many insects, while the stray dogs and rats increase in number. The population wasn’t asked if they want the dump to be placed there,” said the mayor. The representative of the Eco Verde project suggested sorting, treating and recycling the garbage, saying the problem can be solved this way. The waste dump in Tantareni has a capacity of 40 million tonnes of garbage. Only half of this potential has been used so far. The garbage stopped being taken there almost a year ago after the inhabitants of the village stages a series of protests.
