War veterans, alongside the administration of the Ministry of the Interior, in the morning of August 25 laid flowers at the Grieving Mother Monument in Chisinau on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the proclamation of Moldova’s independence. The veterans of the Nistru war of 1992 were awarded by the Ministry of the Interior in respect for the sacrifices made by them, IPN reports.

Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan said the national holidays bring together and unite the Moldovans as citizens and as a nation that 26 years ago chose the democracy, freedom and independence. “The beginning wasn’t easy and today we realize that without the courage of those who struggled for independence we wouldn’t have known what independence and national values are and wouldn’t have had a history about the foundation of our country,” he stated.

In his message to the war veterans, Alexandru Jizdan said they are those who laid the foundations of the Republic of Moldova and what they did by their sacrifice for this country can be rewarded only by combining efforts to ensure the country’s further prosperity. “Moldova went through reforms and transformations in all the areas and the European road generated big changes. Independence Day is a day when we can take stock of our accomplishments and an occasion for transmitting the love for the country and nation to the future generations,” stated the minster.

President of the Union of War Veterans of Chisinau municipality Vasile Iakubov said that August 27 is more than an independence holiday. “It is the day when we go back in time to remember the wish of the people that gained the independence. Twenty-six years ago, Moldova took a safe step that strengthened national dignity and freedom, which are two of the most important values obtained by struggle, sacrifice and devotion. This day will always remind us of the heroism of our comrades who struggled for the young state Republic of Moldova and of the sacrifice they made for the country’s independence,” he stated.

On August 27, the Republic of Moldova celebrates the 26th anniversary of the declaration of independence.
