Eight geographical indications and three designations of origin are registered in the Republic of Moldova. Recently, a traditional specialty was also registered - plums filled with walnut kernels.
The Parliamentary Committee for agriculture and food industry held hearings on the implementation of the Law on protection of geographical indications, denominations of origin and traditional speciality guaranteed.
At the hearings, Andrei Popa, acting director of the State Agency on Intellectual Property, said that 67 products with potential for geographical indication, denomination of origin and traditional speciality guaranteed are identified. Recently, an interactive map of traditional products with geographical indication, denomination of origin and traditional specialty guaranteed has been launched.
According to data presented to the Committee, currently, there are three protected geographical indications delimited for wine production. The wine-producing geographical areas for the production of wines with a protected geographical indication are: "Valul lui Traian", "Ştefan-Vodă" and "Codru". In total, 78 grape and wine producers operate in these associations. The total surface of these three areas is 9.2 thousand hectares, while the 2018 certified volume was over 1.2 million bottles of bottled wine with geographical indication.
