After over two years of the crime committed in Vulcănești, where a man was shot dead in front of his house, the family’s lawyer Ion Mazur said that even if there are incontestable proofs, the prosecutors refuse to take legal action over murder attempt on the wife and minor child of the victim.

In a news conference at IPN, Ion Mazur reminded that the murder was committed in May 2019 as a result of a conflict. The man, who was the father of four children, was wounded mortally in front of his house by five attackers. “The youngest person was sentenced to 12 years in jail. The other accomplices to the murder and murder attempt were given symbolical two-year jail sentences, but in reality they stayed in jail for only about six months,” said the lawyer.

Ion Mazur noted the expert examination shows bullets were fired from several guns, not only one gun and not all of these reached the victim. Videos from the scene presented by the injured party show that a murder attempt was also made. The defense challenged the orders not to take legal action over murder attempt. At least five court decisions annulled such orders, but the prosecutors make new orders.

Ion Mazur suspects there is a system problem. He said that at least in high-profile cases, the prosecutors decide what charges to formulate. The rule of law principle is this way violated as the prosecutor should be independent when conducting the investigation and when sending the case to court. There is evidence that a murder attempt was made on the mother of the four children who remained without their farther after this was shot one day before the wedding party of his older daughter.

Widow Olga Stoica said she is tired of looking for justice as she has made attempts during over two years and a half.

The crime was committed in May 2019 following a conflict between the victim and two of the culprits, who insulted him near a local shop. An older conflict existed between those families. Later, five men went by a car to the man’s home and fired at him in the presence of his wife and his 12-year-old daughter. The man who got 12 years fired five shots at the victim from a legally held gun. The victim died on the way to the hospital. He was 37 and had four children, the youngest one being one year and a half. This March, the Ungheni Town Court convicted five culprits tried in this case. Four of them got by two years, while the one who fired at the victim was sentenced to 12 years in jail. The convicted men were aged between 21 and 38 and are from the same village as the murdered man.
