The chairman of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin made an attempt to change the state flag and anthem even in 2007, when he was head of state. A special commission was created to design a new flag that would replace the tricolor, while Grigore Vieru was asked to write a new anthem, said the leader of the Anti-Mafia Movement Sergiu Mocanu, who was then presidential adviser, Info-Prim Neo reports. “He invited Grigore Vieru to write an anthem together with Eugen Doga. But they both refused. Duca (Gheorghe Duca, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova – e.n.) came with an anthem composed by Eugen Doga for the Academy and gave it to Voronin. This man who uses 30 million lei a year for such ideas as new school uniforms and is tolerated as a member of the Government tried to institute a new anthem,” Sergiu Mocanu said in a news conference. Speaking about the fact that a number of district councils where the Communists hold a majority of seats hoisted red-blue flags alongside the national one, Sergiu Mocanu said that the Communist leader’s deeds, including the street protests, are aimed at returning to power and taking back the property appropriated by Deputy Speaker Vlad Plahotniuc.
