The heads of the Liberal-Democratic Party and the Communist Party last weekend met to discuss the election of the head of state. Vlad Filat said the meeting took place on Saturday, while Vladimir Voronin told the reporters they met on Sunday. Besides, Vladimir Voronin said Vlad Filat suggested he agrees that the candidate for head of state should be apolitical. The Liberal-Democrat leader asserts he said a decision to this effect will be taken within the ruling alliance, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We agreed that the President should be elected so as to overcome the political crisis. I understood Filat shares the opinion that the future head of state should be a person from outside Parliament,” said the Communist leader. Vladimir Voronin also said that the Communist Party does not have a candidate for the head of state. He stated that extensive discussions will be held when there is a list of candidates, including those fielded by other parties. “In general, the Communists, Liberals and Democrats support the principles of the market economy and Moldova's sovereignty, independence and integrity and know that the living conditions are poor. There are no ideological divergences in this respect,” said Vladimir Voronin. For his part, Vlad Filat said the meeting with the Communist leader wasn't a secret one. “We discuss a lot and many things. We never had meetings in woods or hidden places. The meetings were held at the head office of the PLDM, in the Government Building and once at the head office of the PCRM,” said Vlad Filat. The Premier said they conferred on the budget, the relations with Russia, his visit to Brussels. “The positions remained unchanged. When time comes, we will suggest a candidate and take a decision within the alliance. For the time being, we are only exchanging opinions,” he stated. Asked if he wants to be elected head of state, Vlad Filat said he would accept such a post only if he was elected by the people. He added he was not fully contented with the post of Premier, but this position enables him to fulfill the promises made to the voters.
