Lawmakers Vladimir Voronin and Anatolie Popusoi will benefit from parliamentary immunity at least until the end of this week, when the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) is to provide additional information to the legal commission for appointments and immunities, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The commission's chairman Ion Plesca said the PG has two days to answer a number of questions and present additional information in the cases of the two MPs.
After the meeting of the commission, the leader of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin said he was satisfied with the results of the discussions were civilized and professional and were based on the principles of law, but the proofs were insufficient for taking such an important decision.
According to the former head of state, the legal case against him was started by order. As to the accusations made against Anatolie Popusoi, the Communist leader said more than 500 contracts for the lease of wood had been signed in 1997-2009. After the new authorities came to power, there have been rented out over 150 wood strips and in only one case.
Vladimir Voronin is investigated for misconduct while holding office as head of state, which resulted in the death of one person during the April 7, 2009 events, the devastation of the Parliament Building and the Presidential Office and other serious consequences.
Anatolie Popusoi is suspected of fraudulently managing over 80 million lei and facilitating the illegal sale of wood to the former head of state Vladimir Voronin while heading the state-run agency “Moldsilva”.
If the legal commission for appointments and immunities rules the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of the two MPs is justified, the issue will be put to the vote in Parliament.
