Volunteers started to donate blood at the two collection units set up in the central park of Chisinau, on the occasion of the World Blood Donor Day, from early morning. Many of them said they came to donate blood for the first time and are proud that they can help somebody who is in need. After donating blood, they received a parcel of biscuits, water and candies. There were politicians among the donors, IPN reports.

Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi said that Moldova does not lack blood for transfusion, but the supplies must be permanently renewed. “This is charity. The people who come here think about other lives too. After collected, the blood is processed and transmitted to regions,” he stated.

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca was among the first donors. He said that he felt well and thanked the people for being generous and for coming in a large number to donate blood.

The Democrat Party head Marian Lupu said that he donates blood the fifth consecutive year. “By coming together here, we do something good as we save somebody’s life,” he stated.

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat said that when you can help somebody, you should do it as this is a gesture of solidarity and mutual assistance.

Some of the donors said it is a family tradition for them to donate blood and they do it regularly, while others said they donate blood at least once a year.

The theme of the World Blood Donor Day this year is “Give the gift of life: donate blood”. According to the Ministry of Health, the blood collected yearly is used for about 150,000 sick people.
