“Who voted for the dismissal of Sturza in 1999? Who put forward the initiative to dismiss him?” This is how the Communist’s leader Vladimir Voronin answered the journalists’ question if the Party of Communists will vote Ion Sturza Prime Minister.
When asked if the Communist parliamentary group will agree to meet with the candidate for premiership, Vladimir Voronin commented ironically, suggesting that discussions could take place. “When will we be able to meet a real prince again?” he asked, noting laughing that Ion Sturza has ‘blue blood’.
As to Sturza’s chances to become Premier, Voronin said this is possible if 14 other MPs from other groups are persuaded, alluding to the MPs who defected from the PCRM a day ago, announcing that they will become involved in discussions for creating a parliamentary majority.
Ion Sturza was Prime Minister in February – November 1999, being dismissed by the parliamentary coalition that consisted of Communists, Christian-Democrats and unaffiliated MPs.
President Nicolae Timofti on December 21 signed a decree by which Ion Sturza was nominated for premiership. So far only the Lib-Dems announced they will support the candidate. The Democratic Party and the 14 MPs who left the Party of Communists said they will not even discuss with Ion Sturza, as the Socialist MPs stated. The MPs of the group led by Iurie Leanca are waiting for an invitation to discussions, while the Liberals didn’t make public their position.
