The leader of the United Moldova Party Vladimir Turcan called on the Romanian politicians to assess the dangers posed by the U.S. initiative to base antimissile systems in Romania and to follow the example of the authorities of Poland and the Czech Republic, which did not allow that their countries be transformed into epicenters of geopolitical conflicts, Info-Prim Neo reports. Turcan made the call during a news conference on February 18. He addressed the left and center-left Romanian political leaders such as Mircea Geoana, of the PSD, Marko Bela, of the UDMR, Constantin Rotaru, of the Socialist Alliance of Romania, Daniela Popa, of the Conservative Party. Turcan said his call is also addressed to Romania's PNL headed by Crin Antonescu. “The United Moldova Party is a left-wing party that is in favor of disarmament and against joining military-political blocs. Thus, we are concerned about the NATO's initiative to locate anti-missile systems in Romania,” Vladimir Turcan said. Turcan accused the President of Romania Traian Basescu of allowing basing U.S. antimissile systems in Romania in 2015 without consulting the independent, sovereign and neutral state Moldova. “The statements made by Basescu affect the Transnistria conflict settlement talks directly or indirectly as the geopolitical interests of the participants in the 5+2 talks are at stake,” he said. Asked to comment on the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov's announcement that Transnistria is ready to host Russian rockets on its territory, Vladimir Turcan said it was a political provocation on the part of Smirnov. Earlier, the Government of Moldova said Romania is a sovereign country that can decide by itself how to protect itself and how to ensure security.
