The Party of Socialists will not give up the idea of having early parliamentary elections now that the Constitutional Court decided that the head of state will be elected by the people, Socialist MP Vladimir Turcan said in the talk show “Place for dialogue” on Radio Moldova station, IPN reports.

“We hoped that Parliament would be unable to garner the number of votes needed to choose the head of state and it would have been thus dissolved. We will now look for other methods to obtain the dissolution of the legislature. The people must obtain early elections by other methods,” stated the MP.

Though he considers that the President must be elected by direct vote, Vladimir Turcanu described the Constitutional Court’s decision as a populist one, planned by particular persons to avoid early elections. “Some knew what decision will be taken. This is a small candy from a larger box that they threw to the people,” he said.

The politician also said that the decision contains some confusion. “It’s not clear what the deadline for setting the date of the presidential elections is. As the decision was taken in a hurry, they formulated incorrectly a sentence providing that the candidate who polls at least 50% of the vote is considered the winner. It’s normal for the second round of voting to provide that the candidate who gains the largest number of votes becomes head of state,” stated Vladimir Turcan.
