Vlad Ţurcanu appointed director of “Teleradio-Moldova”

Journalist Vlad Ţurcanu was confirmed by Parliament as director general of the National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova” (TRM) at the suggestion of the company’s Supervisory and Development Board. He was named for a seven-year term that cannot be renewed, IPN reports.

No questions were put to the candidate in Parliament. As many as 57 PAS MPs and one member of the BCS Bloc (Adela Răileanu) voted in favor of the appointment of Vlad Țurcan as TRM director. The other BCS MPs voted against, while the MPs of Șor Party left the sitting earlier.

Vlad Țurcanu is a journalist and communication specialist, with work experience of over 20 years in both of the areas. In 2012-2016, he served as adviser to and spokesman for President Nicolae Timofti. Earlier, he worked as a journalist for Radio Moldova, TV Moldova 1, RFE/RL’ Moldovan Service and a member of the Broadcasting Coordination Council. Vlad Țurcanu is a Bachelor of Journalism and Communication Science, with the degree being obtained from the State University of Moldova. In January-November 2020, he performed political activities, being the first vice president of the National Unity Party of the Republic of Moldova (PUN).

At the start of November, Parliament voted to transfer back the National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova” under the Parliament’s supervision, as it was until 2019. The mandates of all the members of the Supervisory and Development Board of TRM and of the company’s director general and deputy directors general end when the current law takes effect. The director general will be appointed by Parliament, at the suggestion of the Supervisory and Development Board.
