The president of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc said peace is an illusion in conditions of revanchism and expansionism and reiterated Moldova’s request to withdraw the foreign troops and munitions from the country’s territory. He made such statements in a panel discussion entitled ”Strengthening multilateral cooperation in the area of peace” that was staged by the Council of the Socialist International, IPN reports, with reference to a press release of the PDM.

The Democratic leader, who is also the Vice President of the Socialist International, centered his speech on the need to resolve the Transnistrian conflict, pleading for the more powerful involvement of regional and global players in finding a suitable solution. He underlined that peace has been kept on the Nistru during 25 years, but the negotiations on the status of the Transnistrian region within the Republic of Moldova couldn’t have been opened.

On the other hand, Vlad Plahotniuc said there is yet an illusion of peace given the events of 2008 in Georgia and those of 2014 in Ukraine, noting that peace in our geographical region is not yet guaranteed. “As long as revanchism is alive and the expansionist ideology is expressed, local conflicts can break out at any time,” he warned.

In this connection, the politician reiterated Moldova’s constant request to withdraw the foreign troops and munitions from Transnistria. “We consider the peacekeeping mission of the Russian Federation that now works in our country in the conflict zone should be transformed into an international civil one,” said Vlad Plahotniuc.

The Democratic leader proposed that Moldova should host the international Social-Democratic forum devoted to peace and security in the region. “I assure you that Moldova will be glad to welcome all the experts and representatives of the Socialist International and this way we will stage an important event for Eastern Europe. Our political organization (SI) will amplify its role of peace promoter in this region and, surely, the potential of helping resolve conflicts in the world,” stated Vlad Plahotniuc.

The Council of the Socialist International meets once or twice a year and brings together most of the leaders of the parties that form part of the Socialist International. On July 11-12, 2017, the Council met at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
