The chairman of the Democratic Party (PDM) Vlad Plahotniuc said he sees two reasons that could determine the Liberal Party (PL) to leave the majority coalition. One reason is related to the emotional factor, while the other one to the Liberals’ wish to rebuild forces in the opposition before the parliamentary elections of 2018. The Democratic leader made such statements in a press briefing after the party’s weekly meeting, IPN reports.

“We consider that the measures taken to fight corruption shouldn’t have made the Liberal Party leave the coalition. Even if they look subjectively at what happened during the last few days, the place of justice and argumentation is inside the justice sector, not inside political parties or the political coalition. Evidence should be presented in court, where the blame or innocence of persons is decided,” stated Vlad Plahotniuc.

The politician also said the fact that the Liberal Party left the opposition changes nothing in the situation created in justice, while the political gestures should not affect the administration of justice. “That’s why we are inclined to believe that the Liberals used the events at the City Hall as a pretext for a strategic political step - to defect from the government to the opposition. In the context of a demanding and difficult period for the government, this step offers particular comfort and enables the Liberals to have a better possible evolution before the elections,” he stated.

Vlad Plahotniuc noted that the Liberals’ defection was discussed in the weekly meeting of the PDM more from the organizational perspective as the Government should work further in the best conditions. “Given that the Cabinet reform is to be approved by the executive during the next few days and will be then debated in Parliament, we will now make only several provisional organizational moves to ensure the Government’s functionality and will finish designating officials in charge of areas immediately after we start to implement this reform,” he stated.

The politician also said the PDM does not criticize the Liberals’ decision and expressed his confidence that they will continue to cooperate at political level.

Last week, the Liberal Party withdrew from the parliamentary alliance. The Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu, after the meeting of the party’s National Council, announced that the Liberals decided to leave the government coalition. The Council was convoked following the arrest of the first deputy chairman of the PL Dorin Chirtoaca, mayor general of Chisinau municipality. According to Mihai Ghimpu, the Liberals’ participation in the government cost the PL a lot and affected its image.
