The next step that the Moldovan authorities must take is to obtain the status of accession candidate of the EU, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat said in the program “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel. The politician stated that important measures will be taken in this respect, IPN reports.

“We must plan the actions and achieve this objective, as we did in the case of the Association Agreement and of the visa regime with the EU. We are now in a more advantageous position than four years ago. Then the foreign partners didn’t know us much. Now we gained respect and their wish to help us. On the one hand, it will be easier for us, while on the other hand the steps will be more complicated,” said the politician.

Vlad Filat avoided forecasting when the Association Agreement with the EU will be signed, saying that the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barosso anticipated that the Association Agreements with Moldova and Georgia will be signed by the end of May. “It is a reasonable timeframe. The agreement will be prepared so that it is ratified by the end of the spring-summer session of Parliament,” added the leader of the PLDM.

He said the parliamentary elections of this year are decisive and must be organized in an exemplary manner.

Asked if the PLDM’s initiative to remove the statute of limitations for the cases started over the April 7, 2009 events is electoral in character, Vlad Filat admitted that this initiative is an overdue one, but it was an omission. “I thank those who staged protests and warned that the statute of limitations expire this year. I’m sure that the bill will be passed, published and promulgated, while those to blame will be held accountable,” said the leader of the PLDM

Referring to the regional situation and the Transnistrian conflict, Vlad Filat said he does not believe that Transnistria will be lost. “We must have a dialogue without somebody telling us where to go and what to do,” he underlined.

The politician considers that the joining of NATO can be a good prospect for Moldova. Though Moldova is a neutral country, it can extend the cooperation with this organization in order to ensure its security.
