The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat considers that the decision to suspend the live broadcast of the Government’s meetings is correct. The politician said the decision to make the executive’s meetings open was taken in 2009, when there was a thirst for information in society. But now this need is fully satisfied. The statements were made in the public debate “Lessons learned and lessons to be learned. Overcoming and prevention of political crises: role of the political class and society - 1” that was staged by IPN News Agency on July 8.

Vlad Filat said a serious debate in the coalition government must offer certain discretion comfort. “In 2009, we had a thirst for information, but now things returned to normality. There is communication and sufficient decisional transparency. In 2009, the Parliament’s sittings were also closed and it wasn’t known what decisions were taken and how. We then decided to broadcast the meetings live. Do you remember how many media outlets attended the sittings and what was there share compared with that of the outlets of the media holding controlled by the Communist government? I think that now we have the instruments needed to ensure decisional transparency and are able to ask for additional information,” he stated.

In another development, the leader of the PLDM was asked to pronounce on the necessity of amending the Constitution. Vlad Filat said that more than one article should be modified. “We do not yet have an amendment proposal, but we are working on different segments,” he noted.

Vlad Filat said the Supreme Law can be amended in Parliament by 67 votes or by a constitutional referendum. There are now no such possibilities in Parliament and it is not opportune to hold a referendum soon. “We are waiting for the Vilnius Summit like an exam that we must take and like a new stage that we must cover,” stated the politician, adding that after this summit, where the Association Agreement with the EU is to be initialed, the country’s strategic task will not be carried out because Moldova must sign and ratify this accord.

Asked if he may renounce the post of party leader in favor of the post of head of state, Parliament or Government, Vlad Filat said that from his viewpoint, the post of President is incompatible with that of party leader. But the posts of Premier and Speaker are compatible with it. However, if he is in the situation to choose between the post of Premier and party leader, he will pick the second as he is now able to openly talk to the people, to see and to feel what was done while he was in power. “I gain satisfaction from holding this post,” stressed Vlad Filat.

The 19th public debate “Lessons learned and lessons to be learned. Overcoming and prevention of political crises: role of the political class and society - 1” of the series “Development of political culture by public debates” was organized with support from the German foundation “Hanns Siedel”.
