“If early legislative elections are held, the country will go again through a very difficult period. I can say that this would be a catastrophe for Moldova,” the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe. The ex-Premier said the early elections represent a problem for Moldova and these should be avoided, IPN reports.

Vlad Filat noted that the people took to the streets because their living conditions continue to be bad. “The crisis in the banking system and the uncertainty about the security of the banking sector caused this state. But the demands of the protesters, more exactly of the protest organizers, cannot really solve the country’s problems – the resignation of the Government and President and the holding of early elections will lead to new uncertainty,” said the Liberal-Democratic leader.

As to Dorin Dragutanu’s decision to resign, the former Prime Minister said the resignation of the governor of the National Bank was sought long ago, but the circumstances in which it was done - one day before the IMF mission started work in Moldova – are yet suspicious. “I hope that this resignation will not affect the negotiations as the agreement with the International Monetary Fund is vital for Moldova given that the foreign financing was practically blocked. The way in which we ensure the financing of Moldova until this yearend depends on this accord,” stated Vlad Filat.

According to him, the crisis in the banking system and other problems should be resolved by the authorities. But there should be pertinent demands concerning the people’s problems on the part of the people who protest sincerely, on the one hand, and prompt action on the part of the government to solve these problems, on the other hand.
