The chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat said the arrest of his relatives on charges of involvement in the stealing of millions of lei from Banca de Economii is not accidental and many people expect him to act emotionally namely now. He made reference to the negotiations held by the PLDM, the Democratic Party (PDM) and the Liberal Party (PL) to form a parliamentary coalition, IPN reports.
“I think many people expect that I will be very emotional at this stage. They should not. I do not believe in coincidences. I think everyone understands that nothing is accidental in this case. I admit that it is hard for me as they are my relatives, but I’m absolutely sure that they will prove their innocence. I didn’t become involved and will not become involved in justice,” said the politician.
The Democratic leader Marian Lupu, when asked to say what he thinks about these arrests and about the assertions that this way the PDM exerts pressure on Vlad Filat, stated that he does not want to comment on such things because these issues are outside politics. “As long as I do not possess information, I cannot make comments or assessments,” he said.
The leader of the PL Mihai Ghimpu also didn’t want to comment on the arrests, saying the law must function in any case. “When the law works, it does not matter whether you are at a wedding party or at a christening ceremony. The law is law. I hope everything will be legal. We should not show that the law works only at particular moments. It must work day and night. However, we know that the document presented by Kroll contains the things we heard yesterday,” he stated.
On July 15, officers of the National Anticorruption Center arrested four persons on suspicion of involvement in two schemes to steal money from Banca de Economii. Among the four are Vlad Filat’s brother-in-law and the son of this.
