It is the people who should take a decision on the union because people’s will is needed for implementing this national idea. The achievement of this desideratum should bring a state of normality on this territory and should bring us closer to the European Union, Vlad Biletski, head of the Public Association “Honor, Dignity and Homeland” (ODIP), said in the public debate “Unionists, statehood supporters and ‘nostalgic people’: confrontation of ideas about the right and capacity of the Republic of Moldova to be an independent state” that was staged by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova.

Vlad Biletski noted that ODIP represents the unionist movement in Moldova, which promotes the sincere wish and notion of national ideal – to see Moldova’s union with Romania so as to implement the ideal of the ancestors. This ideal has been promoted for many centuries so as to achieve a really independent and sovereign, big and powerful state both on the internal and external arenas and, respectively, with the same language.

According to him, the unionist current accepts and respects the minorities living in Moldova and even stages activities in the Russian language as well. The conflicts in society are created artificially at the upper level, including in the Transnistrian region, so as to keep the Republic of Moldova hostage and this could not reunite with Romania. But the state, as it is perceived by society, will no way be affected by the union.

Vlad Biletski considers that only the country’s sovereignty will be affected after the union, not yet the people and the territory. Romania is an EU member state where human rights are respected, while the Republic of Moldova lags behind in ensuring the observance of human rights. The union with Romania will bring only better living conditions, safety and stability.

The head of ODIP stated that during the 25 years of independence, the Republic of Moldova didn’t achieve all the set objectives and this shows that the state is fragile and was formed to promote evil interests and to commit frauds. The goal is not to build the identity or to strengthen the notion and idea of state in Moldova and not to form a unitary state. The Republic of Moldova is neither unitary, nor sovereign and indivisible.

The young man expressed his confidence that the nice things he saw abroad, including in Romania, can be brought to Moldova through the national ideals that were sung, written and eulogized by the greatest martyrs of the Romanian nation.

The public debate “Unionists, statehood supporters and ‘nostalgic people”: confrontation of ideas about the right and capacity of the Republic of Moldova to be an independent state” is the 59th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates”, produced with the assistance of the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
